“Only the hardiest men can stand straight amidst this city’s winds; they are the pillars of her grandeur.” -Xi’tac, kalashtar poet

Terrance Hartigan was transferred from another district and promoted to Guard Captain of Firelight 5 years ago. Its residents expected another sleazy captain who wormed his way into the position to mooch protection money and services off them. Then Terry jailed the first person who tried to bribe him.

They learned quickly. He hated bribes. He hated corruption. Most of all, he hated people harming his citizens, his district. He drank and whored almost as much as the last captain, but when it came to the job he had a stubborn honor about doing it right.

After a few years, they noticed other changes. Terry’s new recruits, mostly former soldiers and warforged, were less corrupt. Robbers and thugs fled to other districts to avoid Terry’s wrath. Firelight had become the safest red light district in Sharn, and business was booming as a result. Terry’s now known as the Hound of Firelight, an incorruptible guard willing to go through Khyber itself to keep Firelight safe.

Terry has a 12-year old daughter named Kara, whom he secretly put in an orphanage when her mother died in childbirth. At first, he did it because he couldn’t raise a child alone while working, but didn’t want her to know he gave her up until she was old enough to understand why. Later, he realized his enemies would target her to hurt him if they knew she was his daughter. She only knows him as Captain Redbeard, the friendly guard who constantly visited her orphanage and brought them presents.
